Since her brand Item Beauty launched in August 2020, Addison Rae, 21, has only put a larger stamp on the beauty industry. In November 2021, she introduced Addison Rae Fragrance, a collection of three perfumes, Chill AF, Happy AF and Hyped AF. And most recently, Rae has curated the fifth edition of Ipsy’s Glam Bag X — previous editions of the Ipsy product have been partnerships with Khloé Kardashian and Halsey. Rae is a natural choice for Ipsy — Item was launched in partnership with brand incubator and Ipsy sister company Madeby Collective.
In celebration of her latest beauty endeavor, we caught up with Rae — and got a peek inside her DMs.
You now have two beauty brands of your own. Why did you want to curate an Ipsy Glam Bag X, and what makes the collection special?
“I have always loved the idea of curating something that combines a bunch of products that I love and giving it a certain vibe. I narrowed this down to a, kind of, ’90s, off-duty, Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss kind of vibe. [You can create] a dramatic, but playful look that’s very sexy, but sweet, like a simple, smoky eye with a red lip.”
There’s got to be some Item Beauty in there, yes? How did you choose which products to include?
“We made this palette to go into this ‘90s world of smoky and taupes, nudes and browns. It has warm and cool tones, which is the perfect fit and just a dead giveaway for what belongs in this Glam Bag. It’s [for creating] the perfect everyday smoky eye, but it can also be subtle. The palette was specifically designed for the Glam Bag X.”
Cool! When you wake up — what’s the first thing you look at?
“Honestly, Twitter was the first thing I looked at this morning.”
Who’s the last person you followed?
“I don’t currently follow anyone on Instagram. But on TikTok, I really just follow anyone whose style I like. And the last person I followed was this cute girl named Madison Wild. I think she lives in L.A. This girl has incredible style, and I hope no one ever looks at her account because I’m going to steal her outfits.”
What’s the last post you saved for yourself?
“I save a lot on TikTok, but I’m also really big into Pinterest. I don’t have a public account on Pinterest, but I save literally the coolest nail looks and the coolest makeup looks on Pinterest. So hopefully lots to come, where I’m attempting to do these makeup looks and crazy hairstyles.
On TikTok, I save a ton of butt workouts, and that’s kind of where I’ve been at right now. I’m saving these like crazy leg day workouts and glute workouts because I’ve been trying to go to the gym a lot more.”
Who on social do you wish was your best friend?
“I feel like I have a lot of people that I definitely wish were my best friend, but I’m gonna say… I have a finsta, and I’ve been following people on that recently. And I try to keep my feed super inspiring. I like to see things that are aesthetically pleasing, or workouts, or nails, or fashion.
Someone on Instagram I would love to be friends with is @i_am_kiko. She’s just really cool. [She introduced me to this brand] Fruity Booty Underwear, and they have the cutest bras and panties. And she is just the most beautiful, coolest looking girl I’ve ever seen on Instagram.”
I will 100% be looking up that underwear.
“I’m giving all my tip tips and tricks!”
What’s the last thing you bought from a social media ad?
“Probably an air purifier, to be honest.”
Do you know which one?
“I actually have it right here. Let me look… It’s called Molekule.”
Is there a meme that you feel like it describes your life right now?
“I love this one [account] that always posts these really fun affirmations, and it’s literally called ‘Affirmations.’ They post the greatest things ever. Probably everything they have ever posted I’ve felt like I relate to.”
Do you have a favorite?
“My friend sends me them all the time. And it’s probably any one of them that’s like, ‘I am cool. I am awesome.’ Telling yourself that every day just makes you feel that way.”
What else is catching your eye on social?
“There are a lot of memes right now about my Spotify playlists! Because my music taste is pretty all-over-the-place, I’d say, people, I guess, don’t believe that I run my Spotify and make my own playlists. So people are saying, ‘Hi, I get paid to play music on Addison’s Spotify at volume two, so we can choose cool songs and [make] people think she listens to them.’ It’s so stupid, but that’s kind of been like the running joke on Twitter right now. I’m like, why would I have a Spotify?… I would not pay for Spotify monthly if I did not use my own.”
So if you had to choose a desert island beauty product, what would it be? I’ll give you two — one from Item, one not from Item!
“I would say my Lip Quip oil. It’s so perfect for any day and every day. Also, lip oil has been a huge trend lately. It’s literally perfect. It’s the best of every product that I’ve seen combined. It’s not sticky, but it gives you that wet, dewy look. And I’m gonna say the Anastasia Brow Gel. I don’t have a brow gel [in my line], and using a brow gel is super essential to me. Also, I think you can do your brows and look fully put together, even if you have nothing else.”
What’s the last product you finished?
“One of my Item Lash Snack mascaras. That’s a product that I can go through quickly because I use mascara very consistently. And probably one of my Pat McGrath eyeshadow palettes. I hit pan on one of my little mini quad palettes.”
Are there any new beauty trends you’re into?
“I’ve found my favorite things, so I don’t change it up too much. But I want to experiment in the new year, and crimpers seem fun to add to my beauty routine.”
What’s something that you do for self-care?
“I like going on walks. And doing face masks.”
Do you have a favorite mask?
“I really like this one from Epicuren — the volcanic clay mask.”
What’s the last show you binge-watched?
“Breaking Bad.”
What was your favorite look in 2021?
“This is a hard one! Let me look at my Instagram really quick… Either the one I wore, either to Elle Women In Hollywood or the Saint Laurent dress I wore to LACMA. I really love that dress.”
Last one: When you’re doing those butt workouts, what’s on your playlist?
“It’s kind of old, but this song by Ellie Goulding, “On My Mind.” That’s one of my favorite songs to work out to.”
