Exclusive: Debut Biotech launches carmine pigment alternative as vegan beauty grows and red dye No. 3 is banned
California-based Debut Biotech reveals its latest breakthrough: a vegan, bio-identical alternative to carmine, an intense red dye sourced from insects that is widely used in color cosmetics, food and textiles. The new release is well timed with the rise of the vegan beauty category and the January ban of Red Dye No. 3. The ingredient will be available to the beauty industry through Debut’s ingredient platform, Bio2Consumer, or its contract manufacturing business unit BiotechXBeautyLabs. L’Oréal Group’s VC arm, Bold Ventures, has majority investment in Debut.
