Athleta’s International Women’s Day cold plunge put the brand’s emphasis on community on display

Too often on International Women’s Day, empowerment can feel abstract. But last Saturday, on the shores of the San Francisco Bay, Athleta immersed women in something tangible: a morning of movement, community and cold‑water courage.

On March 7, the premium activewear brand partnered with the female‑founded Ocean Beach Plunge Club for a women’s-only cold plunge at the iconic Ocean Beach. The club, known for its monthly plunges — also known as their “salty socials” — has become a mainstay for women seeking connection through shared challenge, making the partnership a natural fit.

The intention was simple: show what strength looks like when women move together. And it resonated. Hundreds of women arrived as the sun rose, ready to take the plunge together. The open water became the backdrop to a collective reset, where the shock of the cold created a wave of strangers who were briefly, beautifully unified.

For Athleta, the Northern California-founded brand that designs for women, the moment feels instinctive. Athleta has long been committed to creating environments where women feel seen, supported and strong in every sense — physically, emotionally and mentally. And as interest grows in real-life experiences rooted in community, Athleta is moving past the online threshold to curate in-person moments that feel participatory and purpose‑driven.

“What makes this moment so special is the spirit of women showing up for one another,” said Erika Everett, Chief Marketing Officer at Athleta. “What started as a small group of women craving connection has grown into a monthly movement people genuinely want to be part of — encouraging each other to take on something a little uncomfortable and challenging, together.”

For Athleta, it’s all indicative of a much bigger movement and a return to the brand’s own beginnings. Long before athleisure entered the fashion lexicon, Athleta championed movement as a source of connection and confidence for women. Now, the brand is stepping back into that identity with intention, reclaiming its place as an early leader in women’s wellness. And doing it in San Francisco matters: The city was the birthplace of the brand and shaped its movement-first mindset. Returning to the shores where that ethos took shape serves as both a homecoming and a recommitment to Athleta’s roots, celebrating strength in all its forms.

Cold‑water immersion, which has surged in popularity across wellness communities, is often described as a practice that builds mental clarity and emotional resilience. For brands like Athleta, leaning into these formats creates conversation about holistic strength — not just athletic achievement but connection, courage and presence.

On International Women’s Day, the morning started with opening remarks from Athleta and its partners, before attendees gathered for a guided shoreline walk along the Great Highway. Hundreds of women walked along the epic dunes, the perfect space for intention-setting and conversation, before bravely immersing in the Bay (a chilling 57 degrees Fahrenheit).

One attendee shared, “I came by myself, but immediately started meeting other women, starting at check-in. The entire experience was epic, but the conversations and new connections are what I’ll especially remember.”

Post-plunge, attendees enjoyed a beachside gathering featuring local, women-owned businesses, making space for connection, conversation and a warm return to shore.

The morning’s ripple effect continued beyond the beach. For every woman who participated, Athleta contributed $250 to Girls on the Run Bay Area, adding up to a total of $50,000. The investment was designed to help local girls find the same confidence and community cultivated by the cold plunge.

For Athleta, a big part of the brand’s message is that sometimes strength doesn’t announce itself — it simply rises with the tide, urged on by women willing to step in, together.
