This profile is part of the Glossy Pop Guide to Influencer-Founded Brands, covering the fashion, beauty and wellness companies started by people who built their careers on social media.  More from the series →

Stephanie Zheng created Jezie Jewelry, an e-commerce jewelry brand, at age 15. She went on to become a holistic esthetician and offered up her knowledge via her social platforms. Inspired by her grandmother’s jade-rolling habits, she launched her skin-care brand, Mount Lai, in 2017. Mount Lai offers a variety of products including natural stone gua sha, face rollers and topical solutions. Its stainless steel gua sha won an Allure 2022 Best of Beauty award.

Platforms: Instagram, TikTok

Why did you decide to bring a brand into this crowded marketplace?

At its core, Mount Lai is a beauty brand inspired by my grandmother and the rituals she passed down to me. I grew up watching my grandmother incorporate jade rolling and gua sha into her skincare & wellness routine. She also taught me from a young age about the Traditional Chinese Medicine ideology of treating things from the root cause, rather than just the symptoms, and this holistic approach is something we incorporate into all of our products and formulations. So many of the ingredients we use in our skincare products like tremella mushroom and goji berry are inspired by the beauty superfoods I grew up eating in the dishes my family would make. It’s such an honor to get to share these parts of my culture with others!

What makes the brand different?

We have an authentic tie to the culture and heritage of the products we offer and take a modern approach to the ancient wisdom that’s been passed down, generation to generation. We prioritize quality, education and a thoughtful, intentional experience from the ingredients that we choose to the protective packaging our tools are housed in.

Fun fact:

My grandmother has been practicing jade rolling & gua sha for over 50 years!
